What cover is available under my policy in relation to Coronavirus or FCDO change in advice?
From 17th March 2020, there is no cover under this policy for:
If the FCDO change their advice to be against all or all but essential travel before my trip, will this policy pay my travel/accommodation cancellation costs?
If the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have advised against all or all but essential travel, your insurance policy will not offer cover for travel disruption or cancellation costs of any kind.
Remember, if you paid for your travel or accommodation with a credit card, and the amount was over £100, you may be able to claim back your money. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes your credit card company jointly liable for any breach of contract (such as an event/trip cancellation). Contact your credit card provider to discuss this in full.
If my flight is cancelled by the airline as a result of coronavirus or a change in FCDO travel advice, will this policy cover me for accommodation and other costs (e.g, car hire)
If your flight has been cancelled by your airline, check if you are entitled to an alternative flight or a full refund by the airline, as your insurance policy will not cover claims for travel disruption or associated costs, in relation to the Coronavirus, associated pandemics/epidemics or diseases, or a change in FCDO travel advice. If you had booked accommodation separately then you will need to approach the accommodation provider to see what your options are. You may be able to include this in your claim to the airline and if not then it may be that your bank/credit card company can support with this, via a section 75 claim. Please contact your credit or debit card company for details on the process.
If my hotel is cancelled as a result of coronavirus or a change in FCDO travel advice but my flight is not, will this policy cover me for flights and other costs (e.g. car hire)
No, your policy will not cover any costs associated with travel disruption or consequential losses as a result of FCDO advice. We recommend contacting your airline directly to see if they are able to amend your booking or provide a refund.
I have followed advice and self-isolated, am I covered to cancel my trip?
If you have self-isolated because you have mild symptoms of a flu like virus, and you’d like to cancel your trip, we ask that you contact your travel operator or flight/transport provider and request to amend the date of your trip or request a refund, as your policy will not provide cover under these circumstances.
Can I cancel my trip because I’m worried about Coronavirus?
You can, but you will not be able to make a claim through your travel insurance policy. None of our travel insurance policies cover for “disinclination to travel” i.e. not wanting to travel due to fear of a pandemic or epidemic, such as the Coronavirus or any similar diseases.
My Airline has cancelled my flight – can I make a claim on my policy?
If your flight has been cancelled by your airline, then you should be offered an alternative flight or a full refund by the airline under EU Law.
I’ve booked an event, excursion and/or a tour but they’ve been cancelled by the provider due to Coronavirus, can I make a claim?
You may find that some of your planned excursions or tours have been cancelled. As these have been cancelled by the provider, you should seek a refund with them directly.
Remember, if you paid for your excursion or tour with a credit card, and the amount was over £100, you may be able to claim back your money. Contact your credit card provider to discuss this in full.
If I contract coronavirus – would this policy pay out for any medical claim?
Yes, emergency medical assistance will continue to be offered as part of this policy providing you did not travel to a country or area which the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advised against all or all but essential travel to. If you were displaying symptoms before travel, and these were not declared all insurance will be invalidated. If you become unwell on your trip please contact the Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as practicable, so they can offer assistance.
If I’m quarantined because of the Coronavirus, will my travel insurance cover me?
If you are quarantined by local government or law enforcement while you’re away, your travel insurance will continue to offer emergency medical costs only, until you are home safely. You should contact our Emergency Medical Assistance team as soon as you are able, if you are put into quarantine or isolation so that assistance can be offered if necessary.
Who will pay if I am quarantined/isolated in my accommodation?
Any additional accommodation or food costs should be covered by the authority that issued the quarantine, along with any reasonable out of pocket expenses that you incur. Losses as a consequence of your isolation may not be covered, such as loss of earnings.
Speak to your tour operator or resort manager to discuss this.
I’m in a country that the FCDO have advised against travel to, what should I do?
If you feel unwell, you’re advised to contact your insurers Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as you are able, they can offer you help and advice on what do if you are unwell.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have said in most cases that British Nationals can still travel home without too much restriction, as long as they are well, and some airports remain open. However, many flights are being rescheduled or cancelled so it’s worth checking your travel plans with your airline directly.
It’s recommended that you check if a period of self-isolation is advised for when you return to the UK.
Am I entitled to a refund if I cancel my travel insurance?
If you cancel your policy within 14 days after purchase (cooling off period), and you haven’t travelled or claimed, a full refund may be considered. Please note that cancellations after 14 days will be processed as per the refund terms and conditions contained within your policy wording booklet.
Please refer to your policy wording for full terms and conditions of cancellation.
